STOP PRESS - BURMA (MYANMAR CYCLONE)
AS reported in the press yesterday May 5th, Lower Burma particularly the Irrawaddy Delta area was hit by a severe cyclone over the weekend. Estimates say that up to 30,000 people may have died and more are missing. The area hit was once know as The Rice Bowl of Asia and we are very worried about the food situation as there is already a world shortage of rice and prices are rocketing; with this tragedy and crops destroyed people may well starve in Burma. This is just one problem amongst the many that will have been caused by the cyclone.
We have two monastic home and school projects in Mon State, which is also reported to have been badly hit. At the present time we have been unable to contact these people. We are particularly worried about one project Sii Pin Thar Yar monastic home which is near the sea and where we have recently dug new fresh water wells, provided a water distribution system and also a new electricity supply (cables and posts from the main road).
Our aim will be firstly to survey our own projects and allocate money as necessary to the homes for food, fresh water and other essentials. If we have further funds available we will target these through organisations (NGO’s) that we know and trust in Burma where we can be sure that the money will be put to the best possible use. The problems with some money given for relief is that it is not always targeted where it is most needed. The Tsunami funds being a case in point. 100% of money received will go directly to the people of Burma.
