Nawang Sangmo is seven years old and is studying in class two at BCH. She is from a large family of ten children and was lucky to be chosen to go to BCH to study in the Bon tradition. There is only a Nepalese school in her village. She says she had only rice and lentils to eat at home as her parents found it very hard to feed ten children and most were always hungry. Here parents main income was from collecting firewood as all cooking in Beijer is with a wood fire. Her parents walk many miles a day to collect the wood and there are only donkeys in the village to carry the wood. When she was first at BCH she was very lonely, but now she has made friends and likes to go to school.
