This is Mg Thet Aung. He is twelve years old and lost his mother and his younger brother in Cyclone Nargis in 2008. His family lost all their possessions and his father, who was a small rice farmer could not look after him; so he was taken in together with other orphaned children by Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Home and School in Mandalay where he is now living and studying. The Nargis orphans have a new home at PDO specially built for them and paid for by a Dutch company.
Below is a description in Thet Aung’s own words of what happened to him on the night of the cyclone.
What happened in Nargis Cyclone hit day When Nargis cyclone hit, the water came into our house, and the level rose up! And so I was in the boat with seven friends but no relatives. In the mean time, an angry wave overturns our boat. While trying to alive ourselves, I pulled nipa palm in the water. However, because of huge waves, I was in the water up and down the whole night. When water came down, I met with my father in the next morning, and my elder brother as well. But I could not find my mother and my younger brother anywhere. In the next day we arrived at Maw Kyun. After that, we moved to Pyin Oo Lwin where relatives live in. While there, I got a contact with Ko Lin Lin Oo and then arrived at Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education High School on July 22, 2008.I, now, am reading in standard six.
