This is Ma Zar Ni Khaing. She is twelve years old and lost her mother and her younger brother in Cyclone Nargis in 2008. Her family lost all their possessions and her father, who was a small rice farmer, could not look after her; so she was taken in together with other orphaned children by Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Home and School in Mandalay where she is now living and studying. The Nargis orphans have a new home at PDO specially built for them and paid for by a Dutch company. Below is a description in Zar Ni Khaing’s own words of what happened to her on the night of the cyclone.
What happened in Nargis Cyclone hit day When Nargis cyclone hit, our house was drifted by the water. I was floating in the current with a log. Soon after I found my father and we took a shelter in a big house. In the next morning, I could not find my mother and my younger brother anywhere. Later we moved to Maw Kyun and stayed there for three days, in War Khai Ma for two months.
Finally, on 29 July 2008, I came to Phaung Daw Oo, Monastic Education High School, Mandalay where my elder brother stay in. I, now, am reading in standard two.
